Georgetown

Located on the northeastern coast of Penang,Georgetown is one of Malaysia’s most visited cities.
Founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light as a base for the British East India Company in the Malay states,
the town, which was named after the Prince of Wales, soon developed into the state’s economic and cultural
hub. An essentially Chinese city today, Georgetown has an authentic Straits Settlement atmosphere,
enhanced by its well-preserved colonial archite traditional wooden shophouses, and the divers
developed by its Indian, Malay, Peranakan, Thai, and European communities.

Fort Cornwallis

The spot where Sir Francis Light (see p103) stepped ashore in 1786, Fort
Cornwallis, in the colonial core of Georgetown, is a watch-replica.cn great place to start an ex

but in 1805 this was  replaced by a star-shaped brick and mortar structur
complete with moat and crenellated walls to  shelter cannon guarding the harbor. As the first
headquarters of the British East India Company in Penang, Fort Cornwallis contained barracks for
troops, a signal station, administrative offices, and a Christian chapel. Today, little remains of the fort apart
from its outer fortifications. The inner area is a park  liberally scattered with cannon. The oldest of these
